Composed for the American amateur saxophonist Elise Hall in 1903, Debussy left the orchestration incomplete at his death. The task of finishing the orchestral score fell to Jean Roger-Ducasse, who prepared the orchestral version in time for its premiere on May 14, 1919 in Paris, conducted by Debussy's student Andr Caplet. This is a welcome reprint of an orchestral score that was, until recently, only available to purchase through numerous piano reductions. All, except for the original Durand reduction, are invalid for study, and none are appropriate for performance, as this is an orchestral piece featuring saxophone, much like Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun is an orchestral piece featuring flute.

In 2005, Dover released "Claude Debussy: Clarinet and Saxophone Rhapsodies - The Piano and Orchestral Versions," which is a clean, full-sized and comprehensive edition - reprinted from original sources. This Serenissima edition is a thin, elegant and compact reprint of the original orchestral version of Rapsodie pour Orchestre et Saxophone, perfect for score study and easy storage.

The score also helps to correct the historical record by indicating the work is part of Debussy's complete oeuvre (CD 104/L.98), and indicating "Orchestration completed by Jean Roger-Ducasse" on the first page of the score. Missing is the year 1903, which is when Debussy finished the short score. Information about the premiere is given, although is remains unclear what the first name of the saxophonist was (here, it says "Pierre"). To further correct the historical record and to better understand its performance, Debussy's original title, Rapsodie ["Mauresque"], could be included in subsequent reprints.
